Display YouTube video

Display video clips from YouTube on your public screens by pasting the address of the YouTube video you want to display, in a YouTube post.

ℹ️ If you have access to the video file you want to display, we recommend that you instead of using YouTube, use our own Video post, where the video is uploaded directly to PinToMind.

It gives you control over what is displayed on the screen, and is generally a better solution.

What YouTube-videos can be displayed?

  • You can display both video clips and live streams* from YouTube.
  • You need to have the rights to display the video. Read more about copyright on YouTube on the YouTube support pages. The safest thing is to display videos you have created and uploaded to YouTube, or videos that you have the permission to display.
  • The video needs to be 'public' or 'unlisted'. It is not possible to display videos that are 'private'. Read more about changing video privacy settings on the YouTube support pages.
  • If you do not want the video to be searchable for others, set the video privacy settings to 'unlisted' when uploading the video.

How to add a YouTube-post to your screens

  1. Go to YouTube.com. Find your video, and copy the video address.
  2. Log on to your account at app.pintomind.com. Select New Post, and "YouTube" in the menu. Paste the video address in the field for "Video URL"
  3. Choose if you want to display the video with sound and subtitles, and if the video should be displayed in an area or in full screen.
  4. *If it is a live stream, the duration of the post is automatically set to 10 minutes, but you can increase the time to as long as you want if you do not want to rotate with other posts.
  5. Save the post.

Extra info in the mobile app

You can add extra information that will be displayed only in the mobile app, PinToMind Go. Click on the mobile icon  "📱" and enter text, link to more information, and/or attachment.

Can I display on all type of screens?

YouTube-posts requires a lot from the physical screens. It may appear as if it will display well, on a preview on your PC, but the result might be different on the actual digital signage screens on the wall. Check what type of hardware you use, and test if the YouTube-post displays well on these. Here we have written about our tips and experience with various hardware and displaying YouTube on public screens with PinToMind.

Overall, and importantly, for the video to display well, is that the browser and software on the screen are updated, and that the screen is connected to a good network. A wired network will work best, but a good wireless network should also work.

The length of the video, the video format and the number of video posts on the screen will also affect the quality of the video display. To display videos for a long period of time could present challenges related to internal memory and system performance. When displaying videos, we recommend a daily restart of hardware.

Because of technical limitations on some Samsung screens, the YouTube post and the Video post cannot not be used at the same time on the same screen.

Downloading and buffering

Displaying of YouTube-posts requires a continuous good network. If the network is slow, or there is no network, the video may buffer, attempting to load. We have added a time out, that means that if the video has not started within 5 seconds, the screen will automatically move on to the next post.

You can experience some buffering during the first rounds, but it will improve over time. Therefore, be patient during the first rounds. The playback becomes more stable over time.

Related videos at the end of YouTube-video

Information about related videos is displayed at the end of the YouTube video. This is a YouTube extension that cannot be opted out. If you want to avoid this, we recommend that you upload a video file directly to PinToMind instead. More information can be found here.

No sound on YouTube-post?

Try this:

  • Check that the sound is turned on, and volume is turned up, on the screen/device that displays the screen content.
  • Select Sound when creating or editing the Video-post or YouTube-post.

Sound on YouTube on Chrome

Chrome OS WITH Chrome-upgrade

Video and YouTube posts appear with and without audio on Chrome OS devices with Chrome-upgrade.

Chrome OS WITHOUT Chrome-upgrade

If the post has not selected sound, the video will be played on the screen without sound. If the post has selected sound, the video will not be displayed at all. You can try to turn off the sound in the post, to be able to display YouTube without sound.

Chrome browser without Chrome OS and kiosk mode

If you try to display video in a Chrome browser without Chrome OS and kiosk mode, you can change the playback permission manually. Open chrome://settings/content/sound in the browser and add the address, app.pintomind.com, which you want to be able to play audio on videos automatically, under "Allow".
